This document isn't even nearly finished, but it contains all the information neccesary. The Amiga configuration is simply shown as a series of window grabs. This isn't how it will be, I've just not added the text yet :-)
Note that most of this changes with PalmOS 3.5 (or 3.3 even ?).
...Someone mailed me this morning asking how to configure MiamiDx and the Palm III so that they can talk to each other. I'm no expert at MiamiDx, I simply copied a Linux HOWTO and then switched on internal ipnat. It works well enough though. I'm going to try get together the correct cables to let me directly use a modem - I have a tiny battery powered 9600 modem.
The Palm device has a serial port that can manage being set at 57600, but sadly most Amigas don't. It's not so bad though, as a lot of us have hyperCOM ports now. So if you use the internal Amiga port set it to 19200, otherwise 57600.
If you need to use sub 19200;
Rates from 1200-9600 are possible. Follow the instructions for 57600, and simply using your required rate whenever 57600 is mentioned.
If you are using 19200;
When it comes to enter the phone number into the Palm prefs, set it to 00. This is a magic number that configures for null-modem.
If you are using 57600;
There is no option to change the speed of the null-modem link when using the "00" option. Instead, you must use a 3rd party program called DirectLink to actually start the network each time. Fortunately, this program is freeware and quite small (4675 bytes). Set up all the prefs the same for 19200, including the "00" for the telephone number. Then instead of selecting "connect" in Network prefs simply use the connect button in direct-link. Make sure that the Network prefs are set to the profile you need and that direct-link is set to the correct speed.
Configuring the Palm side
Open the preferences application and find the Network page. Set;
- Service
- Amiga (or whatever you prefer)
- Name
- blank
- Password
- blank
- Phone
- 00
Now click on the "Details" button and set these options;
- Connection Type
- PPP
- Idle Timeout
- Power Off
- Query DNS
- No
- Primary DNS
- same as MiamiDx uses for its DNS
- Secondary DNS
- same as MiamiDx uses for its secondary DNS
- IP Address
- 192.168.1.2
BTW, 192.168.1.x is a special group of addresses that don't exist on the Internet. If you used another address, it could clash with another computer somewhere (only from the point of view of your Palm and Amiga, external computers can not see the Palm, or the IP numbers you are using on this Palm/Amiga lan).
The connection script is pretty much up to you. I use;
- Send CR
- Wait for PALM
- Send IMHERE
- End
BTW, the Palm ROM contains a few tools such as ping and traceroute. While you are in Network prefs, open the "log" from the menu and enter "? [return]".
